Youth MUSIC WORKSHOP by salome mc
In 2018, I created “Hiphop without Borders” as a dynamic, hands-on, experimental music workshop for visually impaired youth of all ages, in partnership with Jack Straw Cultural Center’s Blind Youth Audio Program and the Washington Department of Services for the Blind.
A year later, inspired by my own struggles as a new immigrant to the U.S, I expanded the workshop’s reach to include ESL students, exploring themes of identity, home, and communication through the power of hip-hop music. Working with international schools such as Olympic View Elementary and Seattle World School, I adapted the workshop to remote, online programming during the pandemic.
At the heart of this workshop lies the goal of empowering children from all walks of life with an intro to creative tools helpful in overcoming barriers to self-expression.
Below are some samples of the music we created during these sessions.
